How To Get A Job In Construction

Finding a new job can be a very daunting experience, but starting a new career or making a career move can be harder. Figuring out where to start is the hardest part. Construction is one of the biggest and fastest growing sectors of industry. It is a vast and varied field requiring cooperation between the different levels of employment such as labourers to engineers and designers. It is due to this diversity that you tend to find there are ample jobs available for both skilled and non-skilled workers.

We have compiled a list of to-dos for those seeking employment in construction who do not have any experience.

Do a Job Search

Start somehwere, anywhere. When searching for a job, it is extremely important to know what to search for. Because you are searching for a job and you have no experience, it is best to use search terms such as ‘construction labourer’ or ‘general labour’. Alternatively, if you are looking for more specialised work, use words such as ‘plumber’, ‘welder’  or any other term.  You will need to learn the ins and outs of the constructon world so finding an entry level position will help you get your foot in the door.

Demonstrate Your Eagerness and Willingness to Work

Although you do not have experience in the construction industry, it is still advised to provide any potential employer with any other work experience you have had. When compiling your resume, ensure to list all the skills you have learnt from your past experience that you think your employer is searching for. Terms such as fast learner, hard worker and leader are all positive and will leave a great first impression.

Look For Smaller Projects

Searching for a smaller, unpaid or volunteer job can also clock up your experience levels. Search in your local community , every now and then you will here that the community is rallying to build a home for thse in need. Volunteer your time. Not only will you gain experience but you will also impress potential employers when they see your volunteer work on your resume.

Persevere And Persist

Everyone has to start somehwere. The only way to get to the top is to start from the bottom. Start work with a small general contractor and work your way from there. As we mentioned earlier, the Construction Industry is wide and varied and currently growing rapidly, so it is only a matter of time before you get your foot in the door.
